Computing the Pitru Paksha calendar…

What is Mahalaya Paksha?

The Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada is set aside for remembering the Pitru Devatas, the ancestors. Families traditionally observe Shraddha on the Tithi on which a parent passed; those unsure of the Tithi observe Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the concluding new moon, which belongs to all ancestors. Use the Shraddha Tithi calculator to find your family's exact day.

Seva in their name. During this fortnight, many families offer Anna Seva and Go-Seva in remembrance. In the tradition, the cow carries the offering onward. This is an offering of love, never a requirement for Shraddha itself.

Observance details vary by Sampradaya; your family's Purohit is the final word.
